Nkawkaw Akuajoo Residents Appeal for Road Construction to Combat Harmattan Dust Crisis.
Residents of Nkawkaw Akuajoo who're in Eastern Region, Ghana, located in the Kwahu West Municipal District, are facing a growing health and environmental crisis due to the dusty conditions brought on by the Harmattan season.
The dry winds have been sweeping across the town, blowing dust into residents' food, water, and clothes, creating unsanitary living conditions that are worsening the public health situation.
Local residents of Nkawkaw Akuajoo have made a heartfelt plea to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman and Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkawkaw Municipality, Hon. Tamimu Halidu, as well as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkawkaw Constituency, Hon. Joseph Frempong of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The community is urging both political figures to set aside their party differences and join forces in advocating for the construction of proper roads within the town. The goal is to reduce the dust pollution, which is not only making the environment unbearable but is also leading to numerous health issues, including respiratory problems.
During Harmattan, the strong winds carry dust into homes, contaminating drinking water and food, and causing washing utensils and clothes to become dirty once again. The residents are concerned about the safety of their children and families, fearing that the dusty conditions may lead to even more severe health issues in the future.
"We are calling on the president of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama through our MCE, Hon. Tamimu Halidu and MP, Hon. Joseph Frimpong, to come to our aid and help us with road construction. The dust has become unbearable, and it's making life very difficult for us," said one local resident. "We cannot even drink our water or eat our food without worrying about the dust. Our clothes and utensils get dirty again, and we don't want to wait any longer for help."

The residents' appeal also includes a call for collaborative efforts from both Hon. Halidu and Joseph Frempong, urging them to unite for the greater good of Nkawkaw. They believe that by joining forces together, they can ensure that the necessary support reaches the community by the end of 2026.
"We understand that politics can divide us, but the well-being of our people must come first," said another resident. "If they can work together to bring us the road construction we desperately need, we will be forever grateful. We will gladly vote for them again in the next election if they can make this happen."
The appeal has resonated deeply with the community, who are hopeful that the combined political influence of their leaders will bring a timely resolution to the dust crisis. If the road is constructed, the town will see not only an improvement in health and cleanliness but also a better overall quality of life.
As Nkawkaw Akuajoo continues to endure the challenges of the Harmattan season, residents remain optimistic that their voices will be heard and that the promises of development will soon become a reality.
