Drama at Home: Ghanaian Mother Angry After Son Scores Grade 9 in the BECE Results Instead of “Grade 50” Because It Looked Bigger.

In many Ghanaian homes, examination results come with a special kind of tension. Parents sit on edge, children pray silently, and the moment the paper is handed over, everyone’s heartbeat becomes a drum. But for Kojo and his mother, this year’s results brought unexpected drama and an unforgettable lesson.

Kojo returned home from school with his results slip neatly folded in a brown envelope. He had worked hard, improved tremendously, and was proud of himself. He had scored a grade of 9 in BECE results, not excellent, but acceptable, and certainly not a disaster under the grading system in basic education, but his mother didn’t know that.

In a viral scene, Kojo, proudly standing at their gate waiting for his mummy to show his exam progress, calls his mum the moment he sees her returning from work to home.

Kojo: "Mummy! Mummy!! My exam results are in, oo!!"

Mum: "Eeeii!! Then we thank God. I hope it is one you're holding now."

Kojo: "Yes, Mum."

Mum: "You have gone to print it."

Kojo: "Yes, Mum."

Mum: "What grade did you get, my son?"

Kojo: "I got Grade 9, Mum."

Mum: "You did what?"

Kojo: "I got Grade 9."

Mum: "Ah!, You said you got what?"

Kojo: "Grade 9."

The moment she heard "9" again from her son, her eyes widened. Looking left side and right, with her hands holding her waist, said,

Mum:

"Ah! Why are you making me suffer like this?"

Kojo: "Ah! Mum, is Grade 9 not good for me?"

Mum: "Bright, even Bright, who no one respects because he is not academically inclined, was able to get 'Grade 40.'" His mother said he got "Grade 40." All your teachers say you're good, but you got Grade 9."

Kojo blinked, confused, and tried not to laugh at his mum, but it was impossible. Kojo tried to explain, but his mother was so furious.

Kojo: "Ah! Mum, Bright, who is not academically inclined and got "Grade 40," has done what? Grade 9 is a single digit."

Mum: "What digit?"

Kojo: "Ah! Mum, a single digit."

His mother was standing at one spot, shaking her head, muttering about how her son "doesn’t like learning.” The mother misunderstands the grading system. She thinks Grade 9 is terrible, not knowing that in the grading system, 1 to 9 are better than "Grade 40 and 50."

Mum: "Ah! God!! You said we should say the truth, but Kojo, you have made me worried. You! We all know you're academically inclined and that you'll get a big grade. You couldn't even get 50. You said you got what?"

Kojo: "I know when I get home you will fry eggs for me, oo!!"

Mum: "Unless I'm mad. Even Bright, who is just roaming about here and whose mother and teachers are saying he is not academically inclined, was able to get 40, and you got 9, and you want me to fry eggs for you, unless I'm mad. You! If your father returns home, I will tell him. You have made us waste our money on you. Yoo!! You, I'm leaving, and your father will come home and meet you."

Kojo, still standing at their gate, put everything aside and tried to mock his mother's small laugh after she walked into the room, very upset.
